I have tended to think that packers have more and better information than the rest of us but it just might be that packers ramped up production more than the non-packers and they now have barns full of heavier hogs that they are trying to work through. It appears that Samuel Brenner had it right in 1876 when he first identified the hog cycle and now we are looking for the trough in hog prices for this cycle that may usher in the liquidation phase.
