With exports already collapsing due to West Coast port strike earlier this year
and then the surging US dollar, news of avian flu was enough to spark another
round of long liquidation selling from speculators.
The USDA confirmed that there is a suspected case of avian flu (H5N2) in Arkansas which could have a significant impact if it continues to spread. Poultry exports to many countries (Taiwan, Singapore, Nicaragua and others) have already been banned from Minnesota, Missouri and California after confirmed cases. The potential impacts are on feed consumption and poultry exports which could depress livestock prices.
H7N9 strain of bird flu which first emerged in 2013 (and impacts humans - 602 infections and 227 deaths) has spread quickly across China and is being allowed to mutate into other forms. Recent reports from scientists and the World Health Organization are raising concerns that mutations could lead to pandemic.
