Hogs by Dennis Smith

As reported yesterday monthly pork export sales were excellent, up 16% compared to Feb of 2016. This marked the 4th consecutive month that pork exports posted double digit gains which is an impressive trend. Weekly pork exports sales, at 21,500 MT were up 5% from the 4-week average. Both China and Hong Kong were buyers of U.S. pork last week. Shipments were good at 22,300 but actually down 2% compared to the 4-week average. Next Tuesday we’ll get an updated meat supply/demand table that should reflect the hog & pig report data. Lean hog futures are testing support levels with the most recent selloff occurring on very light volume of trade. It’s my opinion that butcher supplies will begin dropping off soon and that the pork carcass, quoted yesterday below $75.00 will likely spend very little time at this level. Our spec traders continue to accumulate summer call options.

I don't know if Dennis is correct in numbers dropping off, so far I haven't seen it!
