The six-day moving average carcass weight - - -

was a bit firm this morning at 214.87#. That is -2.29# below the same date last year. Last year producers were tacking on extra pounds to make up for the shortage of hogs. That is +6.49# over 2013. There is a good chance that heavier hogs is going to be the norm now.

The percentage of packer hogs continues to be higher than usual. My feeling is that packers have expanded more than non-packers. If there is a severe liquidation phase coming up, one of the outcomes may be an increase in vertical integration of hog production.
